The short version
Choose Frienzy when the gap is the company’s own app after the trip is booked, and the advisor stack should stay where it is. Consider Tern when advisors and agency owners need one system for clients, proposals, payments, commissions, and reporting, with a Tern app as the way clients read the plan. These are weak substitutes. Tern’s strength is the operating platform, including card authorization and commission rollups. Frienzy’s strength is a store listing under the travel company’s name. A host agency can run Tern and still be looking at a different product for a branded traveler app. Do not treat the Tern for Travelers icon as that branded app.
At a glance
| Frienzy | Tern | |
|---|---|---|
| Primary focus | Traveler experience platform that turns itinerary and booking information into a branded mobile app. | Travel agency software to book and keep the books for advisors and agencies. |
| Best suited for | Tour operators and travel agencies that want a branded traveler app and will keep their reservation system or CRM. | Solo advisors, growing agencies, and hosts, in one workflow from inquiry to booking. |
| Traveler app | Branded iOS and Android apps with the itinerary, documents, messages, and updates. | Tern for Travelers, a free iOS and Android app from Tern Software. The same itinerary also opens in a browser, and the app is optional. |
| Branding model | Company name and logo in the App Store and Google Play, published under the company’s developer accounts. | The traveler app in the App Store and Google Play is Tern for Travelers, published by Tern Software. |
| Itinerary workflow | AI reads PDF, Word, Excel, and similar files. A person reviews the draft before travelers see it. | Drag-and-drop proposals and itineraries. AI Assist turns a supplier PDF or email into a structured itinerary clients can approve on a phone. |
| AI | Itinerary ingestion from those files, with human review before publish. | AI Assist imports supplier emails and PDFs into an itinerary. The advisors page says a pasted supplier PDF becomes a structured itinerary, with room types and images preserved. |
| Integrations | TRES, ClientBase, and Softrip, plus one custom API integration on the Growth plan. | Tern says it integrates with Signature, lists Virtuoso as coming soon, and connects to major insurance providers. |
| Back-office / CRM | Does not replace the reservation system or CRM. TRES, ClientBase, and Softrip can remain the system of record. | CRM, payment authorization, commission tracking, credential management, and sales reporting. |
| Offline experience | Itineraries, maps, and documents saved on the device. | If a client has the Tern for Travelers app, Tern says it downloads content to the phone so the itinerary remains available without data or Wi-Fi. |
Where Frienzy is different
Whose name is on the app
Frienzy publishes the app under the travel company’s name and logo, on the company’s developer accounts. Tern for Travelers is Tern Software’s app. Clients can also skip the app and open the itinerary in a browser.
Frienzy does not keep the books
Payment authorization, commission splits, credential management, and agency reporting are Tern’s published scope. Frienzy does not sell those jobs. It connects to the system that already holds the booking.
After the booking, not instead of the CRM
Frienzy’s named connections are TRES, ClientBase, and Softrip. Tern’s published connections are consortium and insurance relationships, including Signature. The lists describe different neighbors.
Where Tern stands out
One workflow for the advisor business
Tern’s advisor pages run from the lead form to the proposal, the supplier booking, and the client approval. CRM, tasks, and documents sit on that same trip.
Payments and a paper trail
Clients authorize payment from an itemized total, with timestamped approvals. Declined insurance can generate a PDF waiver. That is back-office protection, not a traveler-app feature.
Commissions at agency scale
Tern publishes commission splits, reconciliation, and reporting for solo advisors and for hosts with many advisors. The homepage leads with keeping the books clean.
A client app that is optional
Tern for Travelers shows the daily plan, documents, and flight updates, and it can store the trip for offline use. Tern also says the browser view is the same itinerary, so the app is a convenience rather than the product.
Which should you choose?
Frienzy is likely the better fit if:
- Travelers should download an app that carries your company name after the trip is booked.
- Commissions, payment authorization, and the CRM already live in another system, or in a platform you are not replacing.
- TRES, ClientBase, or Softrip should remain the record that feeds the app.
Tern may be the better fit if:
- Advisors need proposals, client records, bookings, and commissions in one system.
- You want clients to approve options and authorize payment inside that same workflow.
- A free Tern app, or a browser itinerary, is enough for how clients read the trip.
Questions worth asking
Is Frienzy an alternative to Tern?
Not for the advisor business. Tern runs proposals, clients, payments, commissions, and reporting. Frienzy is an alternative only for the narrower job of a branded app travelers use after they book.
What is the main difference between Frienzy and Tern?
Tern is the operating platform, and Tern for Travelers is Tern’s client app. Frienzy is the travel company’s own traveler app and does not include Tern’s back office.
Does Frienzy replace the CRM, payments, or commissions in Tern?
No. Frienzy does not authorize cards, track commissions, or replace the CRM. Those jobs are why an agency buys a platform like Tern.
Which is better for a travel agency?
Choose Tern when the agency needs to run the book of business. Choose Frienzy when that book already has a home and the agency wants travelers in an app under the agency’s name. Some agencies will need both jobs, from two products.
